Kong Earn Two Wins in Home Opener

Cleveland Kong celebrate after scoring against Steel City Surge.

The Cleveland Kong secured their first two wins of the new year in a tri-match against the Steel City Surge and the Niagara Frontiersmen. The Kong prevailed in both matches, earning three sets to one, and demonstrated their exceptional skills on the court.

Phil Swartz, the Right Side Hitter for the Kong, delivered an exceptional performance in the match against the Steel City Surge, leading the team with 21 kills and 7 blocks, playing a crucial role in their win. Kong exhibited commendable depth and resilience throughout the matches, showcasing their ability to triumph under intense pressure.

In a post-game interview, Phil Swartz expressed his thoughts on the level of competition in the VLA. "The VLA and [NCAA] Division 1 men’s volleyball have a great deal of similarities and differences! The VLA is right up there with Division 1 in terms of talent, atmosphere, and athleticism. The speed of the game is significantly faster at the Division 1 level, but the VLA will catch up quickly once all the talented volleyball players start joining this amazing league!"

Kong look to repeat their success at the upcoming VLA Central Cup on March 4-5, 2023 in Chicago, IL.
